First Impressions: Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou episode 1

What happens when monster girls enter our world, beginning with a snake-like Lamia? Sexy hijinks, of course!

It’s been a while since I dipped a toe into the pool of ecchi harem anime, but the concept of Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou (aka Everyday Life with Monster Girls or MonMusu) was too good for my inner pervert to pass up.

Based on the manga of the same name, MonMusu in set in a Japan where the government kept the existence of ‘Demihumans’ – Mythical creatures such as Lamias, Centaurs and Harpies – a secret. Now, with the introduction of the Interspecies Cultural Exchange Act, representatives from these species are being sent to stay with hosts in Japan.

Enter Kimihito Kurusu. The unwitting and unprepared young man has a Lamia – A monster with the upper body of a human and a long, snake-like tail – named Miia dropped on his doorstep by overbearing government official Ms. Smith by mistake. He can’t help but take the scared creature in, and so begins Miia’s life with her “Darling”, as she calls him.

MonMusu doesn’t pull its punches when it comes to to the ecchi – It is overtly sexual from the get go. The episode opens with Miia being brought to orgasm by having the end of her tail stroked, so you’re not left with much doubt as to what kind of series you’re sitting down to watch. Sexual tension (and the fanservice) increases as it is revealed that humans and monsters are forbidden by law to harm each other or engage in sexual activities, and there we have the base premise of the show laid out as we move from one silly situation to the next (bathtime, a lingerie store that caters for demihumans, love hotel) as the smitten Miia encourages and the bashful Kimihito resists.

There is a more serious element to the episode though, and sympathy builds for Miia as she experiences ridicule and disgust from members of the public during the couple’s excursion to a shopping district.

On several occasions MonMusu is just a few inches shy of being a hentai anime, and it is most definitely not going to be to everyone’s taste. I’m a sucker for monster girls, so they’ve got me for this one and I’m interested to see things get crazier and crazier as more girls are intoduced, such as the Centaur and Harpy in next week’s episode. It’s not high art by any means, but it is a bit of raunchy fun with an interesting spin on the harem anime concept.

  1. I think I started reading the manga a while back, and it was pretty ecchi from the get go. If this is your thing then I don’t think you will be disappointed, not sure though how much freedom they will have in the anime with the ecchi scenes so will have to watch and find out for myself. This is a pretty good laugh, and it it shows some of the problems you would come across if you ended up with a fantasy creature haha.
