First Impressions: Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri Episode 1

A portal in Japan opens, with a slew of Roman-inspired soldiers, dragons and all manner of monsters appear, slaughtering civilians left and right. On the outskirts of this we have Youji Itami, a JSDF officer and otaku, on his way to a doujinshi events. Interrupted by screams, dragons and fantasy monsters killing randomly, he jumps to, saving as many as he can and dispatching enemies. As the force of police and JSDF come about , the tide quickly shifts and the enemy is repelled back into this gate, which still stands open, questions and curiosity abound.

This is the fantasy novel written by Takumi Yanai, turned into a series of mangas, and now an anime.

I haven’t read the novel, or the manga (just yet), but the first episode had a great mixture of military, adventure/fantasy and action, with a little dab of comedy by the MC.

I do like the step the industry has taken into the fantasy realm, giving up a slew of different variations, and this is once again another that hasn’t really been given a big focus before: modern military VS fantasy.

We’re given a tid bit of information about the supporting cast of the crew, with the first episode setting up the story and characteristics of the MC. All-in-all, it was a fun ride watching this, and am looking forward to the new episodes.
