Early Japanese Animation Showcased Online by the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art

To celebrate 100 years of animated Japanese films, the National Film Center at the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art has created a website showcasing over 50 Japanese animated films made from between 1917 and 1941.

The Japanese films are listed on the website and can be ordered by name or date. But for those looking for something specific, the films can also be viewed by genre, such as musical, war/propaganda, sports, and teaching material. Different techniques, including cutouts and stop motion, are also available. Unfortunately, some parts of the website, such as the section with information on the animators and creators of the film, are only available in Japanese at this time.

If you’re interested in checking out the films, head to the website or check out the video below to see a small sample of what is available.
